Haringey Stop the War Coalition
End the Occupation!

THREE REASONS TO END THE OCCUPATION OF IRAQ

1. The war is not over. It has only just begun George Bush’s “war on terror” is stuck in the sands of Iraq. More American troops have died since the “end” of the war than died in it. US hospitals are filling with wounded soldiers. 8,000 Iraqi civilians have died. And George Bush has just been given another $87 billion to carry on fighting. Tony Blair lied to the British people and he lied to the troops. He is sending thousands more soldiers to kill and be killed. Gordon Brown is spending more of our money on war, not schools and hospitals.

2. This war is for oil not democracy Iraq has the world’s second largest proven oil reserves. The first act of an Iraqi democracy would be to follow Nasser and nationalise the oil to raise revenue to rebuild their shattered society. Democracy means the people rule, not, we get to impose some exiles. And democracy in Iraq would threaten the existence of the other Arab regimes. Remember 1989 in Eastern Europe. Russia pulled back and the people rose. This is George Bush’s nightmare.

3. This is a colonial occupation Ordinary Iraqis are standing up to a military occupation. They are not fighting to bring back Saddam. They are not fighting for religion. They are fighting to free their country. The longer the troops stay the longer the bloodbath will continue. The US is now trying to bring in the UN. But a colonial occupation is the same, whatever hat it wears. UN sanctions were responsible for the deaths of over 1 million Iraqis. UN troops will protect US interests and US corporations. They won’t bring democracy.

On February 15, 30 million people demonstrated around the world. We said the war was a lie. In response, Tony Blair lied some more.

We may not have stopped the war starting. But we are starting to stop the war on terror. That is why everyone who opposed the war in February should stand up and be counted on September 27th and demonstrate in Central London for peace and justice in the Middle East.
